as i know..
Router-a machine  that act as a gateway that provide access to the network
proxy server-place between user machine and internet, also act as a firewall that provide protection and as a cache to speed up the web display.

can we use router wthout internet connection?---just for connection between users
why?
why router cannot act as a firewall but proxy server can?
since both are place between user's machine and Internet?
why

Hi Audrey,

Router is actually a tool to connect between two different networks, regardless whether it has an Internet connection or not. For example, u have 2 departments where the ip is 192.168.0.0 and the other department is 192.168.1.0.  They are not in the same network class - u cannot ping each other.  So u need a router at the middle so that the two networks can speak to each other.

Router, as it names suggest, it routes the packets to the intended receiver without checking the packets, whether it has a virus or not.  However, a proxy acts as a controller to the network.  It can restrict access to certain computers and checks the packets are for whom.  A proxy can also be a gateway to other networks (There are actually various types of proxy servers).

We can use router without Internet connection (bear in mind, router is costly).  But incase ur network is small and involve the same class of network, a switch is sufficient to connect ur computers to form a simple LAN.

Hi xin_yao,
I dont think theres a software that can be installed on ur pc, which have the capability to control the network traffic.  However, depends on the type of router (not all router have this feature), u can configure the max bandwidth that can be allocated to a user (by idnetifying the ip address).  However, this is only convenient if u are using static ip address for ur network. The other way to limit a user's bandwidth allocation is by using a proxy.  But u will need a server/ pc that acts as the proxy/ gateway where each and every other pc that wants to connect to the internet, must go through the proxy.  For normal user, applying this is such a waste of electricity (the proxy pc. server must always be switched on).
