haha...
there is no "best" language.
u must define yourself what language to use based on the project scope itself.
some project best suitable to be developed in Java, and some may be not.

my suggestion is: try to know as much programming language as u can. BUT master any one of them.

for me, i m trying to master the Java programming language, coz its the easiest 1.  Roll Eyes haha.  Grin

and for industry demand in Malaysia, expertise in these language will have better chance to get a job:
i) .net -- c#, vb.net, including ASP.net (c# more famous in industry...)
ii) Java -- especially J2EE (one of the most demanded)
iii) PHP -- this is most popular in industries (so if you are saying u r a comp science or IT student, industry are expecting you to KNOW PHP)  Tongue
iv) make sure you know what is LAMP technology (bukan teknologi lampu arr...  Grin)

lastly, just be prepared yourself 100% when you are in industry, coz u will never know what weired technology the company is using. (u might never heard about those technologies!)  but don worry and don be scared. haha.

definition from wikipedia
Quote
The acronym LAMP refers to a solution stack of software, usually free and open source software, used to run dynamic Web sites or servers. The original expansion is as follows:

Linux, referring to the operating system;
Apache, the Web server;
MySQL, the database management system (or database server);
PHP or others, i.e. Perl, Python, the programming languages.[1]
The combination of these technologies is used primarily to define a web server infrastructure, define a programming paradigm of developing software, and establish a software distribution package.

Though the originators of these open source programs did not design them all to work specifically with each other, the combination has become popular because of its low acquisition cost and because of the ubiquity of its components (which come bundled with most current Linux distributions). When used in combination they represent a solution stack of technologies that support application servers.

there are many software bundles available to be downloaded and 1 single install can have all the web-server, database and php running.
one of the example is XAMPP
and few others to be named...
