The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a popular East Asian tradition of Chinese origin, dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty [dubious – discuss], that spread to neighbouring cultures like Japan. It was first called Mid-Autumn festival in the Zhou Dynasty. In Malaysia and Singapore, it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. The Chinese Lantern Festival is held on the 15 day of the first lunar month.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month of the Chinese calendar (usually around mid- or late-September in the Gregorian calendar), a date that parallels the Autumn and Spring Equinoxes of the solar calendar. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the two most important holidays in the Chinese calendar (the other being the Chinese Lunar New Year), and is a legal holiday in several countries. Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally, on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomeloes together. Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs.[1]
14-Sep-2008, 15th day of eighth month of Chinese Lunar Calendar. Its mooncake fectival today.
Sitting alone in my room, with sweet memories flash back during my final semester. huhu... really miss those under-graduate days. here's one of the best mooncake festival during my undergraduate day.
It was in the year 2006, during our final semester of studies. It was my junior who brought me to my friend's house. Actually it was just to eat some mooncake and light some lanterns. But it turn out our other Malay friends visited us. One of them suggested that we walk around with the lanterns passing few streets. All of us agreed and got started.
we walked around 4 streets from Jalan TU30(my friend's house) - Jalan TU27(my house). We stopped by few of our other friend's house and shared the mooncake which we cut into small pieces. (Mooncake ade 2 je, tapi nak share ramai2, so terpaksala potong kecik2).
Well, it was fun! Really miss those days~~~
to all my friends: Happy Mid-Autumn/Mooncake Festival! Be happy Always!
